  • What is RSS Feed and how does it work?

Posted on Timeless Kathy Sammons 47 comments

This is a post that has been around for a little bit but I think it is still very valuable.  Let me know what you think?

What is RSS Feed and how does it work?  That is a good question.  Many people have a basic understanding of what it is, however, they don’t know the best way to use it.

Who uses feeds like this?  USA Today, BBC News, ABC New and on and on… so why not You.  This is a great way to ensure that people who are interested in you, stay interested in you.  You want to give them ample opportunities to subscribe so that you can be there for them when they are looking for some information or advice.

Like wise, you want to subscribe to sources of information that keeps you informed without taking you hours to search and find it.

    .
The reason that you want people to follow your personal or business blog RSS is you want people to know who you are.  People join people that they know, like and trust.  What better way for them to get to that point than to be reading your blog.

Click on my RSS Feed and keep connected to me! :)

    Happy Trails…..

RSS Was something i just could not grasp when I first started marketing online. The Term Really Simple Syndication just did not seem very simple to me. Great post and I will be sure to share it.

Bingo with your remark, “The reason that you want people to follow your personal or business blog RSS is you want people to know who you are. People join people that they know, like and trust.” Indeed, it's like any other relationship…it gets built through ongoing communication, not a one chance meeting. Staying in touch is vital to building those relationships, and you have pointed out that it is a great way to do that. Keep up the great posts, Kathy. You're in my google reader!

      Kathy,

Nice post. Is there a way to tell who or how many are subscribing to your RSS feeds?

      Great post Kathy.

I'm going to be honest here, and say that that was the most simple explanation of RSS feeds that I have ever seen.

RSS feeds have kind of been this cloudy, ambiguous “connection” out there that people knew existed, but had no clue how to use.

“If you're a blogger, you need an RSS feed, but what does it do?”

      This explained it very well.

      Great job!

      Thanks for that Kathy,

RSS is kind of a confusing and misunderstood internet thing that most people don't understand. I wasn't aware of signing up to Google Reader for that, so I am doing that now. Now it should be crystal clear!

      Hi Kathy,
Great RSS overview video. Thanks for sharing that. I’ve been using Reader for some time now and think it’s absolutely great!
Not only can you subscribe to blogs and news feeds, but many sites offer that functionality after you’ve done a search. These days, I’m more surprised if I don’t find a way to subscribe to the feed. It sure is a terrific way to keep up on what’s happening!

    • http://www.kathysammons.com/ Kathy Sammons

Thanks for coming by. You have got a good grip on this tool and I believe that most others are getting there. I really liked the way that he explains it so that we can completely “get it”.

Those Common Craft videos are cool. He makes it so clear and straightforward. Thanks for the explanation of RSS feeds. It’s always been a mystery to me, though I don’t know why. The video takes the mystery out of it and connects the dots for me.

      Hi Kathy,
This is great info, I had a very hard time understanding what RSS is when I started to learn online marketing. It does still have its weight and it is a good way of noticing people about everything you do. Not to mention that you can create RSS feeds for many of your submissions like Ezine articles and even your youtube channel.
      Have a great day,
      George

There are so many acronomyns involved in the internet – but I suppose there is bound to be…
There is so much technology around webites – there has to be.

This article and that brilliant little video have uncovered, for me, what RSS feeds are. Thanks Kathy

A very nice introduction to RSS feeds and why they are important for anyone who has a blog. I don’t use it as much as I should and will take another look into my Google Reader to see what is actually there! Thanks for the post.

Wonderful!  I didn’t know about the Google Reader thing.  I have never done RSS because I didn’t want 100 MORE emails coming to my inbox!  But if I can go to one place and see the posts, I can do that!  Now I need to figure out Google Reader :)

      Kathy,

RSS is a thing of beauty, it makes sharing my content so easy. I always RSS to email all my posts to my email as an addition way to share my content. It works like a charm!

    • http://hansschoff.com Hans Schoff

Hey Kathy, RSS is a great thing to use because some people may not want to sign up with their email but they will sign up to receive your RSS feed.  This allows you to continue to get your content to them but simply through a different medium.  The key is you’re still in contact and communication with your visitors because you have different ways for them to get your info.

    • http://www.kathysammons.com/ Kathy Sammons
